A paranormal tale of spirits and legends. Algen is finally home after spending most of her teen years, and young adulthood in Washington State. She has never been clear on the reason she was sent to live with her father’s relatives. But she has a job she loves and can finally live in the place she loves. The Aurora Borealis fascinates her; Algen has missed the lights and winter terribly. The Grannies want her to be careful. Should she be wary of the new hire at the native corporation? She’s sure if he gets too close her heart is going to be in grave danger. The cultural anthropologist is pursuing her with the single-mindedness of a big predator. Gunrik is too smart, too much of a hunk and far too tempting.

Aurora Song eBook Cherime MacFarlane

"Just like that Gunrik walked into my life..."

Yes, but this is more than a love story. Aurora's Song is a mystical journey and a piece of Alaska's history told through the eyes of Algen, the intrepid heroine. Gunrik, her handsome but mysterious new neighbor, is also enmeshed in the culture and lore of the Sami and Athabaskan people. As usual, Ms. MacFarlane creates believable characters and draws from personal experience to bring the frigid Alaskan wilderness to life. Granny Alva Mae and Granny DeDe add color and flavor to the novel.

When Algen goes all Julie Andrews at the Aurora Borealis, she discovers that she should have heeded the old superstitions about not "calling" the Northern Lights. Her beguiling voice attracts more than she bargained for...and Algen has her night of reckoning.

Like Cherime MacFarlane's other books, I thoroughly enjoyed this imaginative and unique story. Put a song in my heart, for sure!

Aurora Song eBook Cherime MacFarlane Reviews

This is an interesting story with a unique location and combining myths of the aurora with romantic elements. I didn't quite believe the relationship between the two main characters, with their attraction moving from first meeting to forever love in a very short time and with almost no real interaction between them. It almost felt like this should have been a reunion story or a fated-to-be-together tale to work like that. However, the lurking danger in the beauty of the northern lights did keep me turning the pages. If you're looking for a romance this isn't really that - it's not an exploration of two people and how they come to be together, more of a situation of danger and circumstances that both navigate in their own ways (with the hero saving the heroine from herself). I was happy to have passed a few pleasant hours reading the story, and I didn't mind the tempestuous heroine.
I always love reading Cherime Macfarlane's books, and Aurora's Song was no different.
In this book, the main character Algen inherited a cabin in Alaska from her parents. She meets her new neighbour Gunrik, a cultural anthropologist who rents a nearby cabin. They met because of "Algen's love of Christmas lights" a few days after Algen sang to the aurora borealis, controlling them like she used to do as a girl.
Algen's Sami and Athabaskan ancestors felt it was bad to sing to the northern lights since they believed spirits inhabited them, something Algen took as a simple myth.
Elders sensed something was up soon after Algen had returned to Alaska after years of absence, and eventually warned her not to go outside when the Aurora was making alluring music. They also sought help from Gunrik, who had quickly become infatuated with Algen, to keep her safe. Alden was attracted to Gunrik from the moment she set eyes on him but wished to keep a wall up.
I loved how the romance between the two strangers developed, as well as the mystery behind the entertaining paranormal story. It was told from both Algen and Gunrik's points of views in different chapters, a style I always loved from this author.
The book was very well written and easy to fall into, making me want to keep reading even when I should have been doing other things. "Just one more chapter," I kept saying and found myself reading many more than intended in one sitting. I did not see the time fly by as I got lost in the intriguing story with erotic bits.
I highly recommend this book to those who like light erotic stories and would be interested in a bit of suspense based on a cultural myth which I personally loved.
An enchanting novella about a woman’s ability to sing to the Auroras that dance across the Alaskan skies. This is Algen’s tale… and Gunrik’s. However, be warned. Singing to the Aurora Borealis is very dangerous.

There is a great deal of truth in this story. While I cannot say if the above warning is true, the government really did import reindeer and Sami people from Norway to Alaska to teach the Alaskans how to herd reindeer. Then 40 years later, a law was passed that only native Alaskans could own reindeer. Thus, the Sami’s had to sell their reindeer, their means to survive. Talk about a huge betrayal. Many Samis left Alaska for good and I suspect they are still bitter about their unfair treatment, and rightly so.

But back to the story. I loved Algen right off. I loved her honesty, her love to challenge, her sense of timing as to when matters should occur.
Next we meet Gunrik, and he fascinated me as well. While his intentions are not quite as clear at first, in short order I liked him as well, and truly enjoyed their odd dance to becoming intimate, and their intimacy turning into love.

While I was not ready to end the book when the end arrived, that is the only negative I had with this story. I loved the characters, all of them, I loved the true history shared, and I loved their dance to love.

So I give this a 4.5 (dinged for ending too soon) and rounding it up to 5.0 because doesn’t allow 4.5s by reviewers.
I found it hard to get into; the very first chapter didn't hook me in at all, there was a lot of feelings and stuff that, coming from a character I wasn't interested in yet, was quite dull. Well written, though.
It got considerably better by chapter two, I was suddenly thrown in.
I enjoyed the style which was very different; it kinda felt like the story was happening in another era. It was all rather formal, which didn't make it feel like a contemporary romance.
While the characterisation was well rounded I can't say I liked the heroine very much. At least, she seems to realise she's bitchy and unfair, as she points it out herself.
Altogether, an enjoyable book, but while I'm happy to have read it, it won't be on my re-read shelf.
Cherime Macfarlane spins a great mythical story. It took me a few chapters to get into the story but once i was it was great. The history behind the story is great. The romance between the character was sweet with Gunrik wanting to keep Algen Safe. The author brought the alaskan traditions to life, very interesting.
